Wir hatten zuhause hin- und her überlegt, wo wir noch ein paar Tage ausspannen wollten nach den umwerfend schönen, aber manchmal auch recht anstrengenden Safari-Tagen in Sambia. Unser Reisebüro empfahl die Insel Likoma im Malawisee.
Die Insel liegt viel näher beim Ufer von Mozambique als von Malawi. Weil die Insel aber schon immer unter englischer Verwaltung gestanden hatte und sich auf ihr der Hauptsitz der dortigen anglikanischen Kirche befand, wurde sie beim Rückzug der Europäer Malawi zugeschlagen. Sie bildet nun, zusammen mit der viel kleineren Insel Chizumulu, eine Exklave Malawis in den Hoheitsgewässern Mozambiques.
Es war eine gut getroffene Wahl! Nach einem haarsträubenden Landeanflug (ich glaubte mit Bestimmtheit, die Räder würden an der Krete hängenbleiben, die wir passieren mussten) waren wir rasch in der Lodge. Wir konnten zwischen zwei Häuschen auswählen und entschieden uns für dasjenige, das gut versteckt und unter Bäumen am Wasserrand des Sees lag und über einen kleinen Pool verfügte. Die Maskenweber konnten wir aus dem Häuschen heraus beobachten. Der Weg dazu führte an einer kleinen Bucht vorbei, die immer voller Leben war. Meist standen da etwa zwei Dutzend Seidenreiher herum, flogen gelegentlich auf und setzen sich nach bewährtem Unternehmensberater-Prinzip neu verteilt wieder hin. Und von der Poolterrasse hatten wir Blick auf ein keine 20m entferntes Inselchen, auf dem es von Vögeln verschiedener Art wimmelte.
Wir haben einmal eine Fahrt ins Dorf Nkwazi gemacht. Der Name bedeutet Fischadler und wir haben auch welche gesehen (aber keine fotografiert). Und ich habe einen halben «Birding-Tag» am Nordende der Insel verbracht. Ansonsten machten wir kleinere Spaziergänge, entspannten auf der Poolterrasse und genossen das Treiben der Vögel um uns herum und die fantastische Küche der Lodge. We had been thinking back and forth at home about where we wanted to relax for a few days after the stunningly beautiful, but also a bit exhausting safari days in Zambia. Our travel agent recommended Likoma Island in Lake Malawi.
The island is much closer to the shores of Mozambique than Malawi. However, because the island had always been under British administration and was home to the headquarters of the local Anglican church, it was added to Malawi when the Europeans withdrew. Together with the much smaller island of Chizumulu, it now forms an exclave of Malawi in the territorial waters of Mozambique.
It was a good choice! After a hair-raising approach and landing (I thought for sure the wheels would get stuck on the ridge we had to pass), we quickly arrived at the lodge. We had a choice of two cottages and opted for the one that was well hidden under the trees at the edge of the lake and had a small pool. We were able to watch the Southern Masked Weavers from the cottage. The path to the hut led past a small bay that was always full of life. There were usually about two dozen Little Egrets standing around, occasionally flying up and settling down again in a diffferent order in accordance with a tried and tested management consultant principle. And from the pool terrace we had a view of an islet less than 20 meters away, which was teeming with birds of all kinds.
We once took a trip to the village of Nkwazi. The name means African Fish Eagle and we did see some (but didn't photograph any). And I spent half a "birding day" at the north end of the island. Apart from that, we went for short walks, relaxed on the pool terrace and enjoyed the birds around us as well as the fantastic meals at the lodge.
